MacLehose Trail

Elevation Profile

Stage 5
Tai Lo Shan - Tai Po Road
9 km - 3 hours - Level of difficulty: moderate
Ascent: 482 m - Descent: 689 m (to Wong Tai Sin MTR) - Highest Point: 428 m

As it is an hour's walk to reach Tai Lo Shan (Tate's Pass), the entrance of MacLehose Stage 5, it is easier to start at Tai Po Road and walk the trail in the reverse direction.
The section in Lion Rock Country Park is a hilly route with several but not challenging ascents and descents. The key attraction is Lion Rock (495m). Stage 5 does not pass this mountain, but it is recommended to make this side trip.
At Sha Tin Pass you find an information board. Here take Sha Tin Pass Road downhill to Wong Tai Sin (about 1 km), where you can catch a taxi or the bus. Do not miss visiting Wong Tai Sin Temple, one of the most beautiful temples in Hong Kong.

It is possible to see many troops of monkeys, Rhesus macaques, along the forests tracks, especially at the beginning of the trail. Be careful, do not touch them and do not feed them! They are not cute pets, they are aggressive!

Allow 45 minutes travel time from Central to the starting point and 30 minutes for your return journey.
